WORLD WE IMAGINE PART I
Reflecting on the profound words from Jacqueline Novogratz in "The Blue Sweater," it's clear that our journey toward making the world a better place starts with redefining our community's boundaries and embracing a shared responsibility for humanity's universal values. The idea that we are all created equal must extend beyond mere words, enveloping every human being on this planet. This daunting task requires innovation in global structures and products, but more immediately, it demands a personal commitment to act as global citizens. From a personal standpoint, my contemplation about improving the world often leads me back to the core concept of empathy and love. These are not just abstract virtues but practical tools that can significantly alter how we interact with and support each other. For instance, the voluntary medical missions I participated in during my teenage years in Cambodia opened my eyes to the stark disparities in health access. These experiences underscored how privileged I am to have basic necessities that others struggle daily to obtain. Such insights form the bedrock of my belief that spreading love and understanding can profoundly impact the world.
Moving from understanding to action, I propose that the first step in fostering a better world is enhancing our dialogue with others. Engaging in conversations with those we might have preconceived notions about can be illuminating. By actively listening to diverse stories and experiences, we can begin to dismantle the barriers of misunderstanding that often divide us. For instance, my project aimed at improving the lives of older adults began with simple conversations. These interactions revealed a diverse range of individual experiences among them, from those still seeking life's purpose to enthusiasts of AI and technology, challenging the common stereotypes about aging. Moreover, my volunteer experiences on Skid Row provided firsthand insights into the challenges faced by the homeless. Conversations with individuals who had recently transitioned off the streets demonstrated the resilience and humanity that persist even in the direst circumstances. These encounters remind us that each person has a unique story and deserves dignity and respect.
As I look toward the future, my goal is to establish a social startup focused on helping individuals realize and utilize their potential. This endeavor will not only provide immediate assistance but will also empower people to harness their abilities for long-term benefits. This vision for a startup is driven by the belief that every person has untapped potential that, when supported and nurtured, can lead to significant personal and community growth. Our collective future hinges on our willingness to act now, to engage deeply with our communities, and to embrace the challenges of global citizenship. As we dare to imagine and build this future together, let us be guided by the principles of empathy, conversation, and active participation in the transformative process of creating a better world for all.
Hi Emily!
ReplyDeleteI like your idea for establishing a social startup to help individuals realize their full potential. I definitely think there is a lot of untapped potential in the world. One way to take this a step further is to possibly create an app to globalize the resources (educational videos, links to funding, etc.) in all different languages. You could also do something similar to Acumen fund where you provide investment for new startups! Overall, you have an amazing idea and vision and there are many directions you can take this! Excited to see what you build from this.

Hi Emily,
ReplyDeleteI liked your idea of highlighting social norms as the first step toward making the world a better place. Doing practical empathy for a global cause only leads to positive change. I liked how you included a call to action, suggesting more dialogue with others to break down misunderstandings and miscommunications. I believe that conversing with others is an excellent way to solve problems and share personal experiences, resulting in better change and understanding. Overall great post!
Hi Emily, I really enjoyed reading your post. It's clear that you've already made numerous efforts to immerse yourself in our community and communities across the world. I loved your suggestion for individuals to initiate conversion more often to help break down barriers and misunderstandings. I also love your start-up idea to help individuals realize their value and potential. Such an engaging post!
ReplyDeleteHi Emily,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post! I totally agree with what you express, the core values for a world where we are all equally respected and live with dignity are empathy and love. The idea of a social start-up to help people to reach they potential is amazing. For the next steps, I would suggest you start by narrowing the target community you would impact creating the startup, and later on when it is expanded who would it be available to (just to make it more realistic). Another idea also popped into my head when reading your post. I love the idea of listening because truly listening to what others have to say is how we can understand what they are going through. What if you considered creating a cultural center where people can share their stories and in some way, honor their past experiences? I just wanted to share it with you in case it is helpful. Look forward to hearing the full idea!!
